OMAHA, Neb. -- Wildfires are forcing officials in Chadron, Neb. to begin evacuating residents on the eastern edge of the city.Flames have crested over the hillsides on that side of town.Late Friday night, officials held a meeting in Chadron to discuss "further action."
In a released statement, Gov. Dave Heineman urged residents to stay calm, but to be ready to evacuate if necessary.If enacted, a full evacuation order for the city could affect more than 5,000 people and 2,400 homes.As of Friday night, five fires continued to burn out of control in three panhandle counties.The National Guard has been called in to help.Friday night, active fires continued to rage in Chadron State Park, and near Harrison, Gering, and Whitney.
